I recently returned from an unforgettable cruise through the breathtaking landscapes of Alaska and British Columbia. This journey was extra special, as I sailed with a large group of family and friends ranging in age from young children to seniors, a true multigenerational adventure. I’m thrilled to share highlights from our magical experience and offer inspiration for your future Alaskan cruise.
The Itinerary:
Our itinerary featured spectacular stops in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Glacier Bay National Park, and Victoria, British Columbia. Each destination offered its own unique charm and incredible opportunities to connect with nature.

Juneau, Alaska: Glaciers & Whales
In Juneau, we visited the stunning Mendenhall Glacier, affectionately called “the Mighty Mendy” by locals. This 13-mile-long river of ice is one of the most accessible glaciers in North America and an awe-inspiring sight. We hiked the scenic trail to the nearby Nugget Falls, a powerful and roaring waterfall cascading next to the glacier—a truly picture-perfect moment.
The adventure continued with a whale watching tour, and I can honestly say it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. We witnessed humpback whales actively surfacing and breaching. Just when we thought it couldn’t get better, a pod of orcas appeared, swimming so close to our boat it felt like a dream. Nature’s grandeur was on full display, and it left us all speechless.

Skagway, Alaska: Into the Yukon
In Skagway, our group rented jeeps and set out on a self-guided road trip into Canada’s stunning Yukon territory. Pro tip: everyone over 16 will need a valid passport for this excursion. This drive gave us the freedom to explore at our own pace, with plenty of photo stops along the way to soak in the sweeping mountain views, pristine lakes, and remote wilderness.
For those who prefer to sit back and relax, the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway is a top-rated alternative. It offers a scenic, narrated ride through the same landscape with fascinating historical context about the Klondike Gold Rush.

Glacier Bay National Park: A Day of Scenic Sailing
The next day was a highlight for everyone onboard: scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park. Towering glaciers, icebergs, and snow-capped peaks surrounded us in every direction. One of the many reasons I recommend booking a balcony stateroom for Alaska is the ability to take in views like these in cozy comfort. With a hot drink in hand, wrapped in a blanket, I spent hours watching this dramatic and peaceful world go by.

Fun Fact: Glacier Bay is home to over 1,000 glaciers, and the park itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rangers come aboard to share insights, adding depth to this remarkable experience.
Ketchikan (Ward Cove), Alaska: Culture, Cuisine, and Fun
Ketchikan greeted us with charming streets, vibrant shops, and a wide variety of excursions. From lumberjack shows and floatplane tours to wildlife viewing and fresh-caught seafood, there was something for everyone. The kids loved the hands-on experiences, while adults enjoyed browsing locally made art and sampling halibut tacos and smoked salmon.

Victoria, British Columbia: An Enchanted Farewell
Our final port was Victoria, and it exceeded every expectation. The evening arrival made the experience even more magical—the waterfront was bathed in golden sunset light, and as the city lit up, it felt like walking through a fairy tale.
It was the perfect final chapter to our Alaskan cruise.
